CCS Staff

We believe one of the single most important factors in a child's success in the classroom is having a teacher that connects with the student.

Over the years we have prayerfully and diligently focused on assembling staff that will help students reach their full potential.  With classes small enough for each student to receive individual attention, faculty get to know each student and work to develop their potential. Each teacher and staff member brings a special "something" that brings out the best in our kids.

Mrs. Rita Bergsma, B.Ed., B.A., C.S.T.C.
Interim Principal

"Teaching, for me, is more than just a job; it's an opportunity and a passion. The most rewarding aspect is providing opportunities for students to discover themselves, recognizing that God has given them gifts that are to be used for His glory. It is important that each student develop confidence in who God has made them to be, developing skills to handle both successes and failures with grace."

"I have been involved at CCS since before I had my own children, convicted that entrusting our community’s children to dedicated Christian teachers who share the values that are taught at home, is the best way to prepare our children for lives of service."

Mrs. Marie Cooper
Admissions & Advancement Coordinator

"I have been involved at Community Christian School since 1999 when my husband and I enrolled our oldest child. I have always considered it important to have committed Christian teachers at the front of our children's classrooms, helping our son and daughter truly understand that God is the creator of the universe and Jesus Christ is the sole means of salvation."

Educators

Mrs. Mary Ruth Downs; B.Ed., B.A. in E.C.E., O.C.T.
Junior & Senior Kindergarten

"Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens?
Bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens?
Brown paper packages tied up with strings?
You can have those favourite things."

"Teaching Kindergarten combines so many of my favourite things like children, teaching, and my faith. I have wanted to be a Kindergarten teacher for as long as I can remember. It was with this goal in mind that I chose to do a four year degree in Early Childhood Education followed by my Bachelor of Education. I have now taught in Christian Schools for almost 25 years…time truly flies when you are spending every day with your favourite things and people."

"I love seeing the joy that children have - I'm so blessed to be able to share with them God's love and to help them become who God created them to be."

Mrs. Erin Hopkins; B.Ed., B.Mus., O.C.T.
Grades 1 & 2

ehopkins@communitychristianschool.ca

"It is a blessing to be able to continue my teaching career at CCS. It is truly a gift to be able to teach in a school that seeks to spread the love of our Lord. I believe that the best gift you can give to a child is to show them the love of God, the relevancy of Him in their lives and the world around them!"

"It is wonderful being a part of the CCS Community and having the opportunity to work with a great professional team and a diverse group of students. It truly is a blessing to see God at work in the lives of our students, as they learn and grow according to His purpose."

Mrs. Danica Harnick; B.Ed., B.A., O.C.T.
Grades 5 & 6

dharnick@communitychristianschool.ca

"I am excited to continue my teaching career at CCS this year. I love teaching and seeing students grow and develop a deeper understanding of our God, our world, and our place in it. It is vitally important for students to be in a place where they can feel safe to make mistakes, ask tough questions, and develop their identity with strong Christian role models, and I strive to create this atmosphere in my classroom."

Mrs. Susanne Rayson, B.Ed., Sp.Ed. Part 2, O.C.T.
French Teacher

srayson@communitychristianschool.ca

"As a French teacher, it is my privilege to help each student learn and appreciate a second language. Also, I believe that providing a safe, encouraging environment to ask questions and express individuality is key to learning. Every one of our children possesses gifts and talents to contribute to the world and it is a joy to see them unwrap and discover those gifts while they develop through their school life. After all, when we work and play together as Christian brothers and sisters, we show the world the heart of God."

Carol Ann Stewart, B.Mus. Ed, O.C.T.
Instrumental Music, Grades 6, 7 & 8

"I was raised in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia, and I thank my dad for his insistence that I learn to play the piano. From the age of thirteen, I could be found every Sunday on a piano bench, playing hymns and choruses in church. After getting a Bachelor of Music Education from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, I moved to Ottawa where I've been teaching Kindergarten to grade 8 music in area schools for over 20 years. Some of my passions are quilting, art and shoes."

Shelley Bakker
Educational Assistant, Resource

"My husband and I have been a part of this school for almost thirty years now and witnessing our four children graduate from CCS has been a blessing. Having served in many roles here previously, I feel honoured to be able to help students recognize their God given strengths and build their confidence and abilities. It's truly a delight to help students "Learn with the Love of the Lord" and grow their learning success."
